History - Surgical Sciences

The history of the surgery teaching in Brazil is closely linked to the establishment of the bicentennial Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro [Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro], which stands out as one of the pillars of university education in Brazil. It has been fulfilling the aspirations of the Brazilian intellectuality since the Colonial and Regency times.

The stricto sensu Graduate Program in Surgical Sciences of the Surgery Department of the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro began its activities in 2009, when the Mastership (first semester) and Doctorate (second semester) courses were authorized and accredited. The Program was based on an inter-institutional, multi and transdisciplinary concept, as the result of the commitment of a group of professors with various academic backgrounds (medical and non-medical) in multiple areas of knowledge, thus integrating and adding values grounded in quality and excellence.

In this way, supported by the Provost, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and the Surgery Department of the UFRJ, the mission established for this Program was to rebuild paradigms within the precepts of a modern educational and health policy, for the training of human resources and the production of knowledge, in benefit of science and technology within the scope of public health, so as to fulfill the society’s needs.

Thus, the Graduation Program in Surgical Sciences of the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro aims at training top-level professionals who are highly qualified for exercising the teaching profession in high education courses, within the scope of Education, Research, Extension and Assistance. Its pedagogical project is designed so as to break through the barriers of fragmented knowledge and to foster the free flow of ideas among professors and students, encouraging the dialogue between education and innovative research as a development strategy. Therefore, the proposal consists of transformations, challenges and demands brought to the Academy, as a result of a deep reflection, aimed at suitability and answers which go beyond the walls of the University, reaching social relationships with the community, within the regional scope. From the new students, it is expected that they are able to transit through and work in different scenarios of healthcare and research and exchange actions and information regarding the processes of production and dissemination of knowledge, thus working as elements for transforming and assembling research groups committed to ethics and common good, and orienting their actions towards the pillars of education and the development of research within the scope of Health, Science and Technology.
